Virus from the Wireless Network?

The wireless network is designed to pass traffic from a properly configured laptop directly to the Internet, without an intervening network operating system. Incoming traffic from the Internet cannot access any part of the University computer network, and there is basically no wireless network software that can host a virus. This, however, means that there is no virus protection software on the wireless network (as there is on the staff and lab PCs). Users of the wireless network are responsible for obtaining and updating antivirus software on their laptops to stop computer viruses in emails and on infected websites. Up-to-date antivirus software is an essential prerequisite for connecting to the Internet, and not just via a wireless network.

Patent and Trademark Searching Via the Web

CliffsNotes::All Titles are now freely available on the web. If you want to download and print one, it's the same price as the hard copy: $5.99.

Now that we've had a week or so of wireless questions under our
collective belts, I thought I'd post some of the most common
problems/solutions/issues:

1. Security settings - users should set it for UNSECURE connections.

They should also disable (uncheck) WEP security settings.

2. They should set their wireless NIC to INFRASTRUCTURE (XP) or ACCESS
POINT (windows 2000 & 98), rather than Ad Hoc or Peer to Peer.

Under Network Properties, the setting should also be to obtain IP adresses/DNS automatically.

3. The SSID is: ubalt-guest

4. Available ports:
80, 443
web, secure web
POP3, IMAP, SMTP, FTP, AOL IM

5. If a user gets a message that they've been 'blacklisted,' it means that they have tried to log in (unsuccessfully) 3 times. They need to wait at least 60 seconds before trying again.

6. When asked to log in, they need to use their network login, not their MyUB or email login.

More Wireless

When attempting to log on to the wireless network, some of you have gotten the message that you've been "Blacklisted" and should call the network administrator.
According to informed sources:

"Blacklisted" is the unfortunate term given to those WLAN users who have been temporarily disabled for having failed to login successfully after 3 attempts. There does not appear to be a way to change that text.

After 60 seconds, they are re-enabled automatically and may try again.

Hope this clarifies some things.
